In response to maternal death, Black women are positioned as heroes saving other women from crisis. In the war on abortion "rights," the state uses their labor, bodies, and caretaking, sustaining the hospital as "another plantation site."

Jon Jon Moore Palacios is a writer from Detroit. He studies afropessimism, poetry, and the paranormal. Jon Jon received an MA in African-American Studies from UC Berkeley, and has received fellowships from The Watering Hole, the Center for African Studies at UC Berkeley, the San Francisco Public Library, and Harvard Hutchins Center for African and African-American Research, among others. His scholarship and poetry has been published in Black Agenda Report, Button Poetry, Foglifter, Interdisciplinary Studies in Literature and Environment, TOPIA: Canadian Journal of Cultural Studies, and Qui Parle: Critical Humanities and Social Sciences, among others. From 2019 to 2022, he hosted AbolitionISH, a Black politics and culture podcast at the end of the world.
